Research on shock waves
Mach is know for his work on shock waves, the mach number bears his name. A claim was made during the Franco-Prussian war, by L, Melsen that it was not the ammunition used by the French that caused savage wounds. The wounds were instead, according to Melson, caused by the impact of the air pushed ahead by the bullet. In 1886 Mach was able to prove Melson wrong.

Mach's principle
Mach helped to pave the way for Einstein's theory of relativity. His principle hypothesized that inertial forces experienced by a body in non-uniform motion are determined by the quantity and distribution of matter in the universe.
