In 1855, Mach began school at the University of Vienna studying physics, philosophy, and mathematics. In 1860 he received his doctorate in physics with his thesis "On electrical charge and induction". Source -
Successfully produced the Doppler Effect in a lab
The Doppler effect, that is, the change in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move toward (or away from) each other, was challenged in 1841. Mach proved the effect to be true when he produced the phenomenon in a lab by constructing a device that allowed the observer to hear changes in pitch depending upon where he stood in relation to the device.

Discovered Mach Bands
Mach published "On the effect of the spatial distribution of the light stimulus on the retina", which described an optical illusion. Mach bands describe "the tendency of the human eye to see bright or dark bands near the boundaries between areas of sharply differing illumination."

Published "The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of Its Development"
In 1893, Mach published “The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of Its Development”. This book is arguably one of his most important works. In it, he "details the fundamentals of mechanics and gives an insight into his scientific reasoning process."
