  • Discovery of Balance

Ernst Mach and Josef Breuer discovered the inner ear was responsible for balance. Ernst Mach conducted experiments on himself while Josef Breuer experimented on deaf people. They both came to the conclusion that the inner ear contains hair-like sensors and fluid that recognized the position of your head. This resulted in the discovery that the inner ear correlates to motion and balance.
  • Supersonic Shockwaves

Mach published a paper in 1887 which revealed a bullet and a shockwave. In the image, he described how the bullet breaks the sound barrier, hence, going faster than the speed of sound. The shadow graph revealed the bullet breaking the shockwave.
