"Structure of Science"
In response to “radical and spirited” attacks on formal logic, Morris Cohen and Ernest Nagel Published Introduction to Logic and Scientific Method to “present the significant results of symbolic or mathematical logic to those who have no previous knowledge of the subject” The book focused on formal logic, mathematical system, inference, methods of experimental inquiry, probability and induction, and some other topics. -
Godel's Proof
Ernest Nagel published Godel’s Proof with James Newman. Kurt Godel published a theorem in 1931 that proved that all mathematics were partly based on propositions that the mathematical system itself could not prove. Apparently, the theorem required a high degree of affinity with mathematics to be understood and was not intelligible by most of the population. Godel’s Proof explained the theorem for those not well versed in mathematics. -
"The Structure of Science"
Ernest Nagel published The Structure of Science in which he discusses many topics including “the logical character of scientific laws.” He suggests four requirements which universal conditionals must satisfy to be considered lawlike statements.
1 Laws should be qualitative only and not refer to specific objects or spacio-temporal location. “Unrestricted universal”
2 Laws are only laws if “there is a set of other assumed laws from which the universal is logically derivable.”
3 The law “is ... -
