Erkisons Stages of Development

  • Infancy: Trust vs Distrust

    Children develop a sense of trust when the caregiver provides calm and compassionate care, if this does not happen distrust is developed. This event is imaginary and would have been my first birthday, as an infant my mother would respond to her baby's cry, offering comfort or food in a calm and patient matter.
  • Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

    Children learn to control their bodies and gain a sense of confidence and incidence from completing tasks on their own. If not given this oppurtunity children will develop shame and doubt. This event would be my 3rd birthday, an event that could've taken place would be; my caregiver encourages me to succeed in physical tasks like bathroom training or choosing what toys to play with and how to play with them.
  • Initiative vs. guilt

    Children begin to attempt to control their environment, and this gives children a sense of purpose, to be discouragedged in this stage leads to guilt and example of this would be a four year old choosing what clothes to wear, what snacks to eat and even being encourage to do things on their own like tieing shoes
  • Industry vs. Inferiority

    Children adjust to new expectionations both in school and socially, success propels children forward failure leads to confidence issues. An event within this time period could be; when I was in elementy school I was in lots of extra curricular events, priased by parents and peers, win or lose I felt much success. Leading me to continue to participate in these types of events
  • Identity vs. Role Confusion

    In teen years children must develope a sense of self with unique personality, failure to advance through social situation will cause a lack of sense of self. A situation that can happen within this time period is; having a strong group of friends that encourages a teen as an individual. Having unique and personal interests will help build a sense of self as well as community.
  • Intimacy vs. Isolation

    Yound adults need to form intimate relationships both romantic and friendly. failure to do this can lead to feelings of isolation and depression. An event that has happened to me within this time period is when I was roommates with my best friend, we were able to be ourselves and strengthen our friendship without parental oversight.
  • Generativity Vs. stagnation

    Adults must cultivate and nuture something to outlast them, through children or community service. failure to do this will create a sense of uselessness. An event that could happen in my life could be grandchildren ( I already have a son in my previous stage) or I in the future I would love to contribute to prenatal and infancy nonprofit or education in my free time (a deep passion of mine)
  • ego integrity vs. despair

    older adults need to look back in life with a sense of fulfillment. failure in this stage can lead to bitterness. An event that could happen in this stage for me would be; spending time with my desendents, and ensuring I have a will or possesions to leave to my children to help them advance as they grow up. So I can leave world ensuring my legacy can continue
