    Identity vs Role Confusion
    Description of Stage: The point in life where one must determine their true identity despite societal pressures and the various influences of family and friends. Description of Event: Jane Doe (age 15) must ascertain her personal spiritual beliefs. Her parents are deeply religious. Jane, however, is coming to realize her personal belief system does not match that of her parents'. She must decide b/w pretending her beliefs mirror her parents' or explore other belief systems.

    Intimacy vs Isolation
    Description of Stage: At this point in life, one will learn if they are capable of establishing long-term relationships, platonic or romantic, with others. Description of Event: Jane (age 25) broke free from her family's spiritual beliefs in the previous stage, but her family's refusal to accept Jane and the subsequent estrangement have caused Jane to fear rejection by others. She has been unable to develop close friendships or serious romantic relationships.
  • Generativity vs Stagnation

    Generativity vs Stagnation
    Description of Stage: At this point in life, one must choose between contributing to society or withdrawing from it. Description of Event: Jane (age 45) must choose between overcoming any lingering reservations she has from her younger years regarding how others may treat her and becoming active in her community through various activities/organizations or remaining closed-off to avoid potentially hurtful interactions.
