Erikson Timeline

  • Autonomy vs shame

Around this time Savannah was grasping the concept of going to the potty. She was able to keep her diaper dry all night and most nights. In Erikson's second stage, the crisis was between controlling her bladder long enough to make it to the toilet or not saying anything at all and feeling shamed for wetting her underwear.
  • Intimacy vs Isolation

Vanessa and Robert got married because they fell in love with each other. They wanted to spend the rest of their lives together and start a family. Erikson's fifth stage, intimacy vs. isolation, states that the crisis is between becoming one and connecting through a deeper level with your partner vs. staying alone and not being able to have a connection with anybody but yourself.
  • Trust vs Mistrust

As Kennedee entered the world by instantly looking around at all the new sights and hearing all the new noises, she instantly started nursing as she heard my voice say everything was going to be okay. In Erikson's first stage, the crisis is between development of trust that mom will care for her child's every day needs or will she become unreliable and inconsistent with the child's care that will lead to mistrust, this can change the outcome of the child's future relationships.
  • Initiative vs Guilt

On this day, Savannah started kindergarten. She started to come home and question on her behavior depending on if she was good or bad. For bad behavior she asked "was I bad mommy?" and when praised she asked "am I good mommy?'. In this stage Erikson states that children need to begin asserting power and control over their environment by planning activities, accomplishing tasks, and facing their challenges.
