    Karen's first year of school

    The missionaries have shown up to her village and she has to attend school. Her classmates and her converse in Yup'ik and the children have been disciplined not to talk in Yup'ik. If they do talk in Yup'ik, the back of their hands are slapped with a ruler. She has developed uncertain feelings towards these new people resulting in mistrust and uncertainty.

    Karen Travels

    Karen has been given the chance to fly across the U.S.A. to attend Washington D.C. with her school. She has finally traveled outside of the state of Alaska and has seen how the lower 48 looks. She is no longer scared of big cities and feels more confident about traveling without her family and doesn't want to be considered a woman from an isolated village in Alaska who hasn't traveled and seen the U.S.

    Karen's few years in school

    Karen has become better at speaking English and she feels more confident than ever. She has learned so much and she is starting to learn how to read. Her teachers are proud of her and how far she has come, which makes her ego boost even more.

    Karen finds love

    Karen decided to work on a fishery boat that travels from Dutch Harbor to Seattle, Washington. On that boat she found love. Her 2nd serious relationship. They met in 1994. She has became pregnant with her first child. The man proposes to her and they get married in May 1995. They welcome their daughter in July 1995.
  • Karen's middle age

    Karen has created a beautiful life for herself. She has 2 kids and 4 grandkids. She is enjoying life with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She loves caring for her family and taking care of her children and grandkids. She has cared so much for everyone, she has looked past her health and has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. She's confident she will beat it. With the love and help from her family she will. Karen has a beautiful life and will continue to care for her family.
