In Erikson's 6th stage, intimacy vs. isolation, the crisis is become intimate and close with another person or choosing to not get into a committed relationship, isolating from others and avoiding intimate relationships. Roy displayed intimacy over isolation.

Roy (60 years old) decides to start volunteering at the local fire department to give back to his community and to also have lasting lessons for his grandchildren as he brings them along. The crisis is between focusing on the future by contribution and worrying about others, or becoming stagnant, only worrying about self, not the future, having no purpose. Roy displayed generativity over stagnation.
  • Erikson's 8th stage Ego Integrity vs. Despair

Erikson's 8th stage Ego Integrity vs. Despair
Roy (70 years old) died in his home after suffering from many strokes. He was surrounded by his wife, daughter, and 2 of his grandchildren. He had little regret knowing he had worked hard for his 70 years of life providing for his family. The crisis is between having fulfillment with life through all the good and the bad, or having regret and resentment with how life went, but acknowledging it is too late for a redo. Roy displayed ego integrity over despair.
