Erikson Timeline

  • Lucero's Infancy: Trust versus Mistrust

    Lucero's Infancy: Trust versus Mistrust
Lucero (age 12 months) was raised under the care of her mother Erica. She was brought up alongside her identical twin sister and had a very loving, nurturing home environment. Her needs were met (nourishment, attachment, attention) and she grew an emotional bond to her mother. She developed feelings of trust. If her needs were not met, she would have developed mistrust. The crisis in Erikson's first stage is between trust and mistrust in infancy.
  • Lucero's Toddlerhood: Autonomy versus Shame and Doubt

Lucero's Toddlerhood: Autonomy versus Shame and Doubt
Lucero (age 2) starts to develop a sense of self distinct from others. She is able to grow and learn from small mistakes such as feeding the dog human food but is punished for touching objects such as hot surfaces. In Erikson's second stage of autonomy versus shame and doubt, the crisis is between developing a healthy sense of autonomy and experiencing shame and doubt through restraint and punishment.
  • Lucero's Adolescence: Identity versus Identity Confusion

Lucero's Adolescence: Identity versus Identity Confusion
Lucero (age 15) was just about to begin her freshman year of high school and was thinking about her future and what career path she wanted to take. She was starting to develop an awareness of herself as a young lady and what her capacities were. Her Inupiaq culture and people expected great things from her after high school and expected her to go off to college. She achieves this throughout high school. The crisis in Erikson's fifth stage is between finding yourself and identity confusion.
