Trust vs Mistrust
Rose is born and surrounded by her parents love and attention. When she cries one of her parents is there to provide what she needs and soothe her. The crisis in this stage is Erikson's first stage, trust vs mistrust. The infant will either develop a love for the world and not fear it (trust), or they will trust no one and be filled with doubt about any rewards that the world may offer (mistrust). -
Identity vs Identity Confusion
Rose (age 11) decided to become a competitive gymnast. She became very good at it and devoted almost all her time to her sport. The crisis in this stage is Erikson's fifth stage, identity vs identity confusion. The adolescent is developing who they are, what they are good at, what their role is (identity) and if any of these questions are difficult to answer or if the adolescent feels unsuccessful in any of these aspects confusion will result (identity confusion). -
Generativity vs Stagnation
Rose (age 40) has been happily married to her husband for 17 years, and they have raised 3 children together. In Erikson's seventh stage, generativity vs stagnation, the individual either focuses on their impact to the next generation (generativity), or they remain focused on themselves and their needs rather than someone else (stagnation).
