  • Initiative vs Guilt

    Marissa is 5 and decides she wants to do a lemonade stand inspired from a tv show and starts to prepare. Her father asks her what she's doing and she explains her idea of the lemonade stand but is followed with criticism from her father for her nonsense. Initiative happens when they start to try new things and explore different ideas which lead to confidence and feeling proud. Guilt can happen when the children is met with a negative reaction leading to sadness and self doubt.
  • Industry vs Inferiority

    Marissa displays her piece at the science fair, hoping to win first place for her hard work. Marissa ends up winning and she feels accomplished and confident with herself. During this stage, children become more engaged in activities that require effort and begin to develop skills. Garnering good feedback from peers, they feel a sense of positivity and confidence. Inferiority happens when they feel they are not good enough which can be caused by multiple failures or negative feedback.
  • Idenity vs Role Confusion

    Marissa realizes she wants to become a teacher and wants to pursue it in her future as graduation comes closer, but her parents disapprove and push her into studying science since she's already good at it. It involves the individual finding themselves in the world. They explore things such as personal values and relationships, developing a sense of who they are. Role confusion comes into play when exterior factors pressure them to a certain standard which can lead to confusion and doubt.
