  • Trust vs. Mistrust

    Trust vs. Mistrust
    Ashley (age 1) is learning how to walk on her own, and she has been taking a lot of baby steps and starting to pull herself up and stand near furniture. She only likes to try to walk when her mother is around. In Erikson's first stage, trust vs. mistrust, the crisis infants may have is learning who to trust in their new environment or around people other than their caregiver.
  • Initiative vs. Guilt

    Initiative vs. Guilt
    Ashley (age 5) just started going to school and is already starting to make new friends in her class. She likes to play with games with her classmates, and she is really good at sharing with others and letting other play with her. In Erikson's third stage, initiative vs. guilt, the crisis is that kids in this age group can either be ready and willing to lead others or may feel criticized for things which can lead to guilt.
  • Ego Identity vs. Role Confusion

    Ego Identity vs. Role Confusion
    Ashley (age 17) is just starting her summer before senior year, and she has a small idea as to what she wants to do when she's older or what to pursue in college. In Erikson's 5th stage, ego identity vs. confusion, the crisis that may arise is that people in this stage may be certain as to what they want to do when they're older, or have no clue as to who they want to be or where their place is in society, which can result in confusion.
  • Intimacy vs. Isolation

    Intimacy vs. Isolation
    Ashley (age 29) met her boyfriend, that she has been dating for a few months now, at her college reunion. They aren't too serious right now, and she hopes that things go well between them. In Erikson's 6th stage, intimacy vs. isolation, the crisis may be that a person may not find someone to be romantically involved with and may feel lonely and isolated.
