Sarah is Named "Student of the Month" at Her Preschool: Initiative vs. Guilt
Sarah is named "Student of the Month" because she loves to help the other students out with tasks such as helping to tie their shoes, cleaning up after themselves, and nicely reminding them of the rules. Now she has a great sense of accomplishment and purpose!
In Erikson's 3rd stage, initiative vs. guilt, those who are successful in exerting control over situations feel initiative, whereas those who exert too much control may get reprimanded, resulting in the feeling of guilt. -
Sarah Takes on Fifth Grade: Industry vs. Inferiority
Sarah (age 10) began her last year of elementary school. Sarah also decided to join her school's volleyball team this year with some of her friends. She's done a great job balancing volleyball practice, chores, family time and school so far.
In Erikson's 4th stage, industry versus inferiority, young children begin to learn to cope with social and academic demands. Success in doing so will create a sense of pride within them, whereas if they feel they don't measure up, they will feel inferior. -
Sarah Starts Her Own Family: Generativity vs. Stagnation
Sarah and her husband's beautiful baby was brought into the world on this day. They decided they wanted to have a child of their own to love and raise, and hopefully, continue their legacy.
In Erikson's 7th stage, generativity versus stagnation, those who engage in meaningful and productive work or choices, give to the next generation. Whereas those who have shallow involvement in the world will feel a sense of stagnation.
