Erikson's theory - Elena Jacques PSY:life span development

  • trust vs. mistrust

Carmen (7 months) is a very loving baby and has become very curious. This is an important stage of life that shapes whether or not baby feels safe in the world based on how attentive parents are to them. Carmen has lived well in her short life and feels curious to the new world. If Carmen was neglected, she would innately be fearful and mistrusting.
  • autonomy vs shame & doubt

Carmen(16 months) is over criticized and put on an unwavering schedule everyday. this stage in life is important and children should be given freedom to make some choices on their own (autonomy). because this was not given to Carmen, she cannot be independent and feels shame for doing so.
  • intimacy vs isolation

Carmen (22) is in a serious relationship once again but has struggled in the past because she would shut out her partner emotionally. this stage explains intimacy which is venerability with your partner, and the other end being isolation which we see with Carmen because partnership is difficult with someone who can't or refuses to open up to you.
