Erikson (Psychosocial Theory) Timeline

  • Erickson's Stage: Initiative Vs Guilt

Julia is six years old and is finally in kindergarten. She is independent and eager to play dodge ball with her peers during recess. In Erikson's third stage, initiative vs guilt, children are likely to show initiative when they are given freedom rather than a guilty child which is likely due to parents who scold them.
  • Erickson's Stage: Identity Vs Confusion

Julia is 20, she is developing a sense of her identity. She questions the world around her and wants to find a religion to feel secure in. She becomes a member of a local organization and immediately feels like she has control of her life and knows what she wants in life. Erickson's fifth stage is identity vs confusion, which young people explore the world around them whether that be through beliefs or goals. If one fails in this stage they have feelings of insecurity and confusion.
  • Erickson's Stage: Integrity Vs Despair

Julia is now on her death bed reminiscing about how she lived her life. She concludes that her life was well lived with many grand adventures with her wife and three children. Erickson's eighth stage is integrity vs despair, which is the time in someones life that they think about the way they lived and what they have done in their life. Some are dissatisfied with the life they lead but the ones that were successful have little regrets and are content.
