Mary Gets to Know an Unfamiliar World: Trust vs. Mistrust
The first stage of Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, trust vs. mistrust, asks the primary question, "Can I trust people?" Mary is entirely dependent on her parents to take care of her, which impacts her physical and mental health. Mary was born to two parents who care for her, which has allowed her to form a trusting relationship. She is comforted when she cries, is fed, and is shown affection. The success in this stage allows Mary to live a fulfilling life.

She has had her share of failures, which has taught her to keep trying. She feels confident in her ability to achieve her goals, and is encouraged by those around her.

Mary has been successful in the 6th stage of Erikson's psychosocial development stage because she has formed an intimate, loving relationship. She is happy and feels safety and care in her relationship with her husband.
