Erikson Timeline

  • Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

At age 4, Philip's parents let him start making decisions on what he wants to eat when the family goes places and what he wants to wear. In Erikson's second stage, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, the crisis is between being able to do things yourself and being afraid to do things alone.
  • Identity vs. Role Confusion

At age 15, Philip is finishing his sophomore year of high school, and isn't sure what he wants to do when he grows up, although he is thinking about being a police officer. In Erikson's fifth stage, Identity vs. Role Confusion, the crisis is between finding yourself and who you are and becoming self-conscious about who you are and never deciding what you want to be.
  • Intimacy vs. Isolation

At age 24, Philip is going to places where he can meet new people and possibly mack on some chicks. The conflict at this stage is between fulfilling and loving relationships, and feelings of loneliness and isolation.
  • Integrity vs. Despair

At age 79, Philip is surrounded by children and grandchildren, passing on wisdom that he wishes he knew as a child, and even as a young adult. In Erikson's eighth stage, Integrity vs. Despair, the crisis is between being happy with how your life turned out, and wishing you could go back and start over in life.
