Erickson’s Timeline

  • Lora’s Decision to Move for College: Identity vs. Identity Confusion

At 18 years old, Lora decided to move from Alaska to California for college. She chose to do this to figure out on her own exactly who she wants to be. If she stayed in Alaska she knew that she wouldn’t get out of her comfort zone. In Erickson’s fifth stage he explains the adolescence crisis, identity versus identity confusion, which is the adolescent figuring out who they are. When Lora left Alaska she chose to find her identity instead of identity confusion.
  • Lora Moves Home for Love: Intimacy vs. Isolation

Lora decided to move back to Alaska after she figured out her true values. She found a great guy and knew she wanted to move home to start a life with him. She didn’t want to end up alone and miss out on a great guy. In Erickson’s sixth stage he explains intimacy versus isolation, that is risking your adolescence identity to start a committed relationship. Those who don’t make that jump may end up isolated. Lora chose to take a risk for intimacy to start a life with someone new.
  • Lora Chooses to be a Stay Home Mom: Generativity vs. Stagnation

Lora and her husband welcome their first child into the world. Her husband works away to provide for Lora to stay home to take care of their child. Lora chooses this because she wants to be able to be with her baby instead of focusing on her own career path. In Erickson’s seventh stage he explains the challenge of generativity versus stagnation. This stage is focused on raising the next generation and focusing on them instead of yourself.
