  • Identity vs. Identity confusion

Jenna enrolled in college a few states away from home, but she isn't sure what she wants to study yet. She notices a flyer for a music group for the semester, and she decides to join. Her father taught her how to play the guitar, and she would like to make friends in her new environment. The fifth stage of Erickson's Psychosocial Theory is Identity versus Identity Confusion; this is where a person determines what their role in life is, and what their place in society is.
  • Intimacy vs. Isolation

Jenna decides to become part of a women's book club. She does not have any intimate partners in her life, and she has the added interest in reading all kinds of literary genres. Over several months, she meets and eventually falls in love with a book club member, Sharon. They begin cohabiting. In the sixth stage of Erickson's Psychosocial Theory, Intimacy versus isolation, a person can determine whether to start and maintain personally intimate relationships or to stay single.
  • Generativity vs. Stagnation

Jenna, a retired teacher, decides to put forth a continued effort to tutor elementary school students in a school of mostly low-income families and disadvantaged children. She wants her legacy to be one of helping children to succeed, regardless of their socioeconomic status. The seventh stage of Erickson's Psychosocial Theory discusses the desires that a person can have with giving of self or services to others versus not doing anything for anyone later in life.
