    Election of 1800

    The election of 1800 ended with a tie between Aaron Burr & Thomas Jefferson. They tied at 73-73, so the Senate decided on who should be president. Thomas Jefferson became the third president of the United States.
  • Marbury v. Madison

    Marbury v. Madison
    William Marbury was a Supreme Court Justice who was appointed on the last day of John Adams presidency. But after Jefferson took over, he told his Secretary of State, James Madison, to withhold his approval papers to get onto the Supreme Court. Marbury took court action. He lost but this case led to the power of judicial review, which allowed the Supreme Court to declare acts of Congress unconstitutional. This balanced out power between the branches of our government.

    Election of 1808

    After Jefferson's two terms in office, the next election was between James Madison and Charles Pinckney. James Madison crushed Pinckney 122-47, and took office in January, 1809.

    War of 1812

    Britain is impressing American sailors so James Madison responds by going to war with them. Some major battles are the Battle of Fort McHenry, during which the Star-Spangled Banner was written and the Battle of New Orleans, which lasted until after the war ended and also kick-started Andrew Jackson's career. During the War of 1812, the White House was burned down in a British assault. After the War of 1812, nationalism was on a rise into the Era of Good Feelings.

    The Election of 1816 was mostly between Rufus King and James Monroe, with the complete champion being James Monroe. Monroe defeated King 183-34 votes, utterly destroying him.

    The Rush-Bagot Treaty ended disputes between the U.S. and Canada over limits on militarization on the Great Lakes.

    Erie Canal begins construction
    The Erie Canal began construction. This canal would connect Buffalo to Albany, New York. Albany soon after this would become the biggest port city of the Union at that time. This construction lasted from 1817-1825, and is a landmark from the Era of Good Feelings.

    Andrew Jackson Invades Spanish Florida
    Seminole natives in Florida were helping runaway slaves get into Spanish Florida. So Andrew Jackson went on a rampage through Florida, overthrowing many Spanish outposts. Now, Jackson's hot streak in battles kept going until he becomes president.

    This court case led to the assertion of Congress to claim assumed powers. This power lets Congress take actions not directly listed in the Constitution.

    This treaty between the U.S. and Spain brought Florida into the Union, but the U.S. had to give up its claim on Texas and give 5 million dollars of citizen claims against Spain.

    This compromise negotiated by Henry Clay brought both Missouri and Maine into the Union. Also,it prohibited slaves north of 30 lat, 36 long, and from now on it is why the new states are brought into the Union, to keep the balance between slave and free states equal.

    James Monroe issued this doctrine to recognize the independence of recently revolted colonies in Latin America, & to make a warning to European countries that any sailing to try and retake their colonies, it will be seen as a hostile act that will not be ignored.

    The election of 1824 was between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. John Quincy won, but many Jackson supporters claim foul play with Henry Clay being paid off to fudge the votes of this election in Adams favor. This is mostly because the majority of populous vote went to Andrew Jackson.
