Equal Rights Advocate Timeline

  • Beginning Years

Susan B Anthony was a strong willed and independent woman. She was born in 1802 and came from a family who led the Quaker way of life, which at the time meant that men and women were equal to God. This belief stuck with her for the rest of her life, it changed her perspective on viewing things. Before her fight towards equality she started off as a teacher. She continued to broaden her understanding of equality by going to conventions and meetings which only strengthened her beliefs.
  • National Woman Suffrage Association

During the conventions and protests she attended, Susan B. met Elizabeth Stanton who shared the same views as her. In 1869 the 15th amendment was released which was upsetting to both of them due to the fact that the amendment didn’t include women. The National Woman Suffrage Association was formed in protest of this, which is an association that fought for women's rights. A year later they founded the Revolutionary Newspaper in which they wrote and shared stories dedicated to their fight.
  • Arrested for Voting

During the1872 presidential election she decided she'd be voting, not caring about the fact it was considered illegal at the time. Once they found out that she filled in a ballot, they took her under arrest. She was fined 100 dollars which she refused to pay due to it being unjust. The event itself not only played a huge role in gender equality but also caused a lot of attention which she used to her advantage. There she kept pleading her case which was the right for women to vote.
  • Final fight

During 1905 Susan B. Anthony goes to the White House and meets with president Theodore Roosevelt about passing a suffrage amendment through congress. Unfortunately nothing happened then, it took fourteen years after that for women to be granted the right to vote. All her speeches, protest, and fighting paid off in the end, which is what she had always wanted. She was willing to spend her whole life fighting for the rights of women even though she wasn’t able to see the outcome.
