    Steinem first gained attention through her expose in Show magazine that focused on the working conditions at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Club. The expose revealed the sexist, and underpaid life of a playboy bunny. The expose was a spark in Steinem’s advocacy for gender equality because she struggled to be taken seriously as a journalist following the expose. Steinem began advocating for gender equality in journalism because women often had to do the lifestyle and fashion categories in journalism.

    Steinem spoke publicly at an event in New York that was organizing to legalize abortion. Steinem spoke about the abortion she had while overseas when she was 22 years old. The event sparked her engagement with the movement. Steinem continued to attend and speak at protests and demonstrations. She also become a women’s movement spokesperson especially in the media. Additionally, hearing from other women made Steinem become a part of the women’s movement that was working toward gender equality.

    Co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus
    Steinem and other feminist advocates founded the NWPC in order to increase the participation of women in all areas of the political system as well as in general public life.
    The NWPC was founded in order to promote gender equality in the political system as well as in the economic, legal, and social systems. Founding this organization further sparked Steinem’s advocacy for gender equality since now she had formed a group women could join in order to advocate for their rights.

    Ms. Magazine first appeared in the December 1971 issue of New York and a year later the stand-alone issue was published. Steinem remained an editors of the magazine for 15 years. The magazine was intended for women and focused on framing contemporary issues in a feminist perspective since the media dismissed the feminist movement.The magazine increased Steinem’s advocacy for gender equality and being an editor helped her to make feminist voices and a feminist worldview more widely available.
