Immigration to the United States
Immigrants from all over the world came to the United States because of famine, land shortages, religious persecution, political persecution, and temporarily to earn money. They were treated poorly and were put under extreme entry procedures. They had to pass physical examination, government inspection, harsh questioning, and long detention.
The eastern United States there was hunting, farming, and villiages. While the western United States was more nomadic, with hunting and gathering. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolished slavery in the United States. -
Black Codes
The Black Codes were not actually meant to be bad laws against the blacks. The southerners changed the laws up to where the blacks were being treated unfairly. -
Klu Klux Klan
The KKK wanted to destroy the Republican Party, throw out Reconstruction governments, aid the planter class, and to prevent African Americans from exercixing their political rights.They were extremely violent. -
14th Ammedment
The 14th Amendment to the Constitution states that all people born or naturalized in the United States are considered citizens of the United States and of the State where they currently reside. -
15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment to the Constitution gave all men voting rights. -
Invention of the telephone
Alexander G. Bell invented the telephone. -
Jim Crow laws
laws meant to bring the blacks down, and make them feel bad about themselves- specifically in the south. -
Invention of the light bulb
Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
The Chinese Exclustion Act banned entry to all Chinese except students, teachers, merchants, tourists, and government officials. -
Haymarket riot
During the Haymarket Affair, the labor union went striking against police brutality, where a bomb was thrown. The aftermath of the riot was that the public opinion was turned against the labor movement. -
The Dawes Act
The Dawes Act wanted to americanize Native Americans by giving land to individual Native Americans, giving land to the settlers, and giving money for farm implements for Natives. -
"Gospel of Wealth" essay
Andrew Carnegie, an immigrant that made his way to the top of the steel industry, wrote the "Gospel of Wealth" essay. The essay stated that people blessed with wealth should share with the less fortunate. -
Sherman Anti-trust Act
The Sherman Anti-trust Act made trusts illegal. -
Battle of Wounded Knee
This massacre took place when the Native American tribe gave up their weapons in hopes for peace. A shot was then fired, and the Native Americans ended up getting slaughtered. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
The court case came to the conclusion of "seperate but equal", which means that the blacks and whites could be in seperate facilities as long as they are equal. -
The Pullman Strike
Three thousand Pullman workers went on strike. Many of the strikers belonged to the American Railroad Union(ARU), founded by Eugene V. Debs. -
"Cross of Gold" speech
William Jennings Bryan delivered the "Cross of Gold" speech. The speech talked about crucifying humankind upon a golden cross because of the currency issures the United States was currently having. This speech put Bryan in the running for president. -

The effects of the Progressive Movement would be:
Initiative- bill proposed by people, put on ballots.
Referendum- voters, not legislation, decide if initiative becomes law.
Recall- remove elected officials from office through early election.
16th Amendment- income tax
17th Amendment- direct election of senators
18th Amendment- prohibition
19th Amendment- women's suffrage
21st Amendment- repeal of prohibition -
"The Jungle"
Upton Sinclair writes "The Jungle" to expose the horrible working conditions that immigrant workers endured, but the public recieved this as they should sanitize their meat industries.
