Environmental Science Project 1

  • Founding of IUCN

The IUCN was founded to promote the preservation of the natural world. This is significant because they take action in order to keep the earth healthy and livable for all organisms. This further brought people together in order to save the planet.
  • Aral Sea Shrinkage

The Aral Sea Shrinkage is the reduction in size of sea because of the diversion of water from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. This has cause many ecological problems. This shows that humans are greatly damaging the ecosystem and that we need to preserve the earth.
  • Amazon Rainforest Deforestation

The Amazon Rainforest has been greatly destroyed since the 1960s because of logging, fires etc.. The destruction of this forest has raised awareness about the impact of humans on the environment. Many efforts have been made to better preserve this forest and the earth as a whole.
  • Gaia Hypothesis

The Gaia hypothesis states that everything on earth works together to regulate the conditions on the planet. The hypothesis is significant because it shows that the planet is something we should take care of and treat like it is alive. This calls people together to take action to preserve the planet.
  • Bhopal Disaster

The Bhopal disaster took place in Bhopal, India when chemical leaked and killed thousands of people and created long-lasting affects for those exposed. This further showed how much we harm the planet.
  • Chernobyl Disaster

The Chernobyl Disaster happened in Chernobyl, Ukraine when a nuclear power plant exploded and released harmful gasses in the atmosphere. This was significant because this raised awareness about the negative effects that we have on the environment. It made us realize how much more careful we need to be about harming the atmosphere.
  • Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a large amount of trash and debris floating in the Pacific. This is very harmful to marine life and ecosystems. When this was first found awareness about correctly disposing of items was spread.
  • Kyoto Protocol

The Kyoto Protocol is a international treaty that was made to reduce gas emissions that cause global warming. This event helped contribute to the environmental movement because countries are working together to solve global warming. It also is one of the most significant environmental treaties.
  • Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was when an oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico dumping large amounts of oil into the ocean. This oil killed wildlife and greatly polluted the ocean waters. This is significant because solutions have been made to better clean up the ocean and prevent this from happening again.
