The first US city to start a large scale survey of air pollution was Salt Lake City. Then more cities followed Salt lake City by starting a survey for air pollution. Because of that air pollution levels were noticed and awareness was raised. -

20 million people celebrated the first Earth Day. It was first organized by Gaylord Nelson who was a former Wisconsin senator and a Harvard graduate student,Denis Hayes. It helped people realize the damage they were doing to the earth and it helped them appreciate nature and the outdoors more. -
