Hart dug a 27 foot deep well in order to obtain natural gas from under the surface. Natural gas was used in streetlights and lanterns from here on. -

Electric Plant
Edison opens the first electric plant in New York to provide power. -
First Commercial Nuclear Power Plant
The first nuclear power plant in the US was built as part of the "Atoms for Peace" program. Massive amounts of energy were created. -
Oil! Black Gold!
America's first commercially viable oil well is dug in Pennsylvania. Oil becomes an excellent power source for larger machines and factories through burning it.
