    World War II Outcomes
    After WWII, the Allies discussed the post war plans and the fate of Germany. The United States, Great Britain, and France agreed that they should work together to restore Germany's economy in order to revive Europe's overall economy. The Soviet Union disagreed and wanted Germany's economy to be weakened. The Allies controlled four zones of Germany but the US, Britain and France comnbined there's into West Germany and the Soviet Union had East Germany, which was ruled under communism.

    The red scare began in the 1920s after the Russian revolution in 1917 but reappeared after WWII. People were afraid of the spread of communism. As a precaution, President Truman set up a Loyalty Review Program that screened government personnel to ensure they weren't spying for the Soviet Union.

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created to protect the members of the organization from attacks from the Soviet Union. Any member who is attacked by the USSR will be aided by all rest of the members of the organization.

    Senator Joseph McCarthy made accusations that federal government officials were spying for the Soviet Union. He had a ist of various names in the state and national government that he suspected were traitors. He fueled the Second Red Scare. Many of the people he accused were not proven to be spies because there either wasn't any evidence or it didn't make any since in the first place.

    Korea was divided by the Allies at the 38th parallel after WWII with the Soviet Union controlling the North and the US, Britain and France controlling he South. North Korea invaded South Korea at the 38th parallel on June25, 1950 to go against the Truman Doctrine. America was pulled into the Korean War to prevent the spread of communism to the South.

    Vietnam War

    Eisenhower: He supported the French campign in Vietnam because he believed in the Domino Theory, if Vietnam fell to communism, the rest of Southeast Asia would too. At the Geneva Accords, Vietnam was split at the 17th parallel. The North was communist and the South was occupied by the US, which only increased tensions.
    Kennedy: He continued to provide support in Vietnam and the military had increased personnel from 2,000 to 15,000.

    "Bay of Pigs" Invasion
    President JFK approved of the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 to overthrow the communist government of Cuba but it ultimately failed. The failed mission made the United States look weak and unorganized.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    JFK order the Soviet Union to remove their missiles from Cuba. President Kennedy ordered a naval blockade on Cuba to prevent the Sovet Union from bringing anymore missiles to Cuba. It wasn't until October 28, when the US and the USSR made a deal to remove both their stockpiles of nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union removed their nuclear weapons from Cuba and the US removed theirs from Turkey. Those few days were the most fightening few days for many Americans.

    The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave Johnson the power to take all the necessary measures to repel against any attack o the US. He started a bombing campaign in Vietnam because the troops were having a hard time fighting there since they weren't familiar with the landscape. The bombs destroyed jungles and forests so the Vietcong would not disappear into the landscape.

    Nixon wanted the Vietnam War to end as much as the whole entire United States but he wanted the wait until the North Vietnamese left South Vietnam, but this goal was abandoned in 1972. By 1975, all of Vietnam fell to communism and Nixon was impeached and left office over the Watergate Scandal.

    Collapse of the Soviet Union
    The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) was discussed in 1987. which was an agreement between the US and the USSR to destroy all of their nuclear weapons. This marked the begining of the end of the Cold War.

    The guards at the Berlin Wall opened up the gates and took down the wall at midnight. Communism was replaced by democracy in Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria, thus marking the end of communism in Eastern Europe.

    Terrorists hijacked four commerical jetliners and crashed them into the twin towers at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Al-Qaeda was the terrorist group from Afganistan that planned and carried out the attack.

    The US began to bomb strategic enemy locations in Afganistan. The Taliban-supported government of Afganistan collapsed in December 2001 but the war has not ended yet. The Al-Qaeda forces fled to the mountains.

    There was evidence to believe that Saddam Hussein was creating and stashing away nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. The UN was going to inspect the country for the weapons but Saddam would not let them.
