Opium War
During 1839 China destroyed a British Ship that was set to trade opium. This started a war between the two nations. Britain won due to their amazing technology. This was important because China was forced to sign the Unequal Treaties which damaged them. -
Taiping Rebellion
The Taiping Rebellion was the biggest peasant uprising against the Qing dynasty that lasted for 14 years. Over 20 million people died and the Qing dynasty was weakened. This is important because this led to the end of dynasties and the start of the Republic of China. -
Great Leap Forward
Mao Zedong started an effort to bring China back by modernizing it. However, everyone was guaranteed a living so the effort from workers was not great. These disastourous events could have led to the downfall of Mao Zedong. This played a significant role in Chinese history becasue Mao made a Cultural Revolution to bring spirit back. -
Mao Zedong's Death
During 1976, China's leader Mao Zedong past away. His death was meanigful to China because his succesor Deng Xiaping had many different views. Deng had started a huge program called the "Four Modernizations". -
Tiananmen Square Massacre
In 1989, a key Chinese figure died leading to college student protests. They seeked political freedom just as their role model did. The government ordered an open fire because they did not leave which caused thousands to die. This was unfortunate for China because their reputation was damaged.
