  • Eugene V. Debs

    He was a American democratic socialist political activist and trade unionist. He was also one of the main founders of the group, "Industrial Workers of the World". Very well known socialist. He ran for president many times.
  • Jim Crow Laws

    The Jim Crow Laws enforced racial segregation in the South. This was after the United States had ended slavery. Significance- this lead to the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    This was a United States federal law signed by President Chester A. Arthur. It banned all immigration of Chinese laborers. Significance- attempted to fix declining wages.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    The Sinking of the Lusitania was when Germany torpedoed a British passenger ship believed to be smuggling weapons. Significance- this placed pressure on the United States President, Woodrow Wilson to take action after American deaths.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    The Zimmerman Telegram was a secret diplomatic communication. This telegram was issued by the German Office. It proposed an alliance between Germany & Mexico. This was just in case the United States entered World War I against Germany.
  • Sedition Act

    The Act was an attempt to extend the Espionage Act. It was supposed to broaden the range of offenses as well as to express the opinion of government that the war was negative. Claimed "unconstitutional".
  • 18th Amendment

    This amendment banned the selling and drinking alcohol in the United States. This was the only amendment that was repealed. Significance- increased crime because people wanted to get alcohol.
  • 19th Amendment

    This amendment granted ALL women in the United States the right to vote. Significance- This was a huge step for women in the fight for equality. This gave them a say in their government.
  • Immigration Act of 1924

    This act limited the # of immigrants allowed enter the US. Immigration visas were given to two percent of the number of people of each nationality in the US.
  • John Scopes - The Monkey Trial

    John T. Scopes was accused of teaching human evolution in a state-funded school which violated the Tennessee's Butler Act. Significance- so much attention was brought to the subject and made people re-evaulate the bible.
  • 20th Amendment

    This amendment was not one of the major amendments. This amendment sets the dates the the federal government elected offices end. Significance- This amendment set more structure in the government and was set to prevent future issues.
  • 21st Amendment

    This amendment repealed the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This meant that it was once again legal to drink alcohol in the United States. Significance- this ended a lot of gang and bad attention on alcohol.
  • Red Scare

    This was a potential rise of communism, anarchism, or radical leftism. This lead to a national witch hunt for possible communist supporters.
