  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    1st battle of the Civil War against two of the last Union forts left in Confederate states. Chances for the North were very slim in the quantity aspect. The South used siege (cut off all supplies) tactics to starve out the Northern Union. Only two men died in this battle.
  • Anaconda Plan

    Anaconda Plan
    A military plan or "Scott's Plan" that was designed by Wilfred Scott in 1862 that called for the Mississippi River to cut the South in half. The blockade was designed to stop trading in the South.
  • 1st and 2nd Battle of Bullrun

    1st and 2nd Battle of Bullrun
    1st- Held in Prince William County, VA. 1st major battle of the Civil War. Union led by Irvin McDowell. 4,718 casualties. When Union army returned, Licoln signed a bill that called for the enlistment of 500,000 men for three years in battle. Lincoln replaced McDowell with George Mcllean.
    2nd- August 28-30, 1862 in Prince William County, VA. Confederate led by Lee, Union led by Pope. 18,300 casualties.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    Lee vs McClellan. Bloodiest single day battle in American History. In Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland. 1st major battle in the Civil War. No real tactic, just getting as close as possible to shoot, and charging with bayonetts after ammunition ran out. 26,000 casualies, 4,000 dead. Totaled more than the war of 1812 and the Mexican-American War combined.
  • Battle of Fredricksburg

    Battle of Fredricksburg
    December 11-15, 1862. Between Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside and Gen. Robert E Lee. Burnside attempted to burn out Lee's troops and failed. 17,000+ casulaties.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    April 30, 1863-May 6, 1863 in Chancellorsville, VA. South vs. North; South won. Joesph Hooker tried to cut off Southern supply lines. Lee divided his army in two to fight the North from all sides. Bloodiest battle of it's time. Gen. Stonewall Jackson died, making a huge impact on the North and South.
  • Seige of Vicksburg

    Seige of Vicksburg
    U. S, Grant vs. John T. Pemberton. Part of the Anaconda plan, ended on the fourth of July of that year with a Union victory. 37,400 casualties. Grant ordered a cavalry brigade to destroy railroads to begin to starve out the South. Vicksburg was one of the last Confederate stronghold. One of the 1st two instances African Americans fought during the Civil War.
  • Gettsburg

    Gettsburg
    Battle held in Gettysburg, PA from July 1-3, 1863. The Union and Confederate forces battle, causing the largest number of casulaties in the Civil War.
  • Battle of Petersburg

    Battle of Petersburg
    June 9, 1864-March 25, 1865 in Petersburg, VA. Consisted of the largest number of African-American soldiers in a battle. Last battle of the Civil War.
  • Battle of Atlanta

    Battle of Atlanta
    Sherman vs. Johnston. 34,000 soldiers for the North, 40,000 defending Atlanta. 11,900 casualties. After this battle, Licoln passed the Homestead Act. This battle was said to be the reason for Lincoln's reelection. It increased Northern morale.
  • Shermans's March to the Sea

    Shermans's March to the Sea
    Sherman's March to the Sea ( or the "Savannah Campaign" ) was a viloent campaign for the North dating from Novmeber 15, 1864 to December 21, 1864. Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman had 5,000 African-American refugees and Northern suppoters terrorize Savannah-Atlanta, Georgia as a psychological war tactic.
  • Appomattox Court House

    Appomattox Court House
    Confederate surrender in a Northern home, not an actual courthouse. Lee surrendered to Grant's union army. Not the end of the war, but one of the last surrenders. 700 casualties.
