Adopted the Declaration of Independence
"On July 2, 1776, the delegates voted unanimously that the American colonies were free, and on July 4, 1776, they adopted the Declaration of Independence." Thomas Jefferson worthe the final draft. The Declaration of Independence was based on John Lockes's idea of natural rights. -
Ratification of the Constitution
New Hampshire became the ninth state to approve the Constitution. The Constitution is now the law of the land. -

Slaves are counted 3/5 of a person. This is significant because of the number of representatives a state gets would change for the South. -
Textile Mills

Steamboats
John Fitch was granted his first United States patent for a steamboat on August 26, 1791. Through steambots, the transportation of raw materials would be easier and quicker. -
Bill of Rights Ratification
Anti-federalists demanded a bill of rights because the constitution had no guarantee the government would protect the rights of the people or of the state. The First Admendment guarantees citizens' rights to freedom of religion, press, speech, and political activity. -
Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin on March 14, 1794. By making it easier to separate the cotton from cotton seeds, the South was able to harvest more cotton efficiently. -
Louisiana Purchase
Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory because he saw that is was an obstacle for his Agrarian Dream if France owned it. Napoleon wanted to sell it because he needed money. He lost money when Haiti revolted. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Jefferson sent Lewis to travel to the Pacific Ocean hoping that he could find the Northwest Passage. On the way, Jefferson wanted Lewis to research the west and make peace with the Native Americans (and deliver his message that they are living on US territory). -
U.S. annexes Texas
The Southerners wanted the annexation of Texas to extend slavery. While the Northerners feared that Senate would tip to the favor of slave states and a war with Mexico would start. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
America wins the War with Mexico. Mexico ceded the New Mexico and California territories to the United States and agreed with the Texas borders (Rio Grander).
