Embargo act
Theembargo act of 1807 was a law stating that forbid foreign trade from the United States. It was sponsored by Thomas Jefferson and enacted by Congress. The goal was to force Britain and France to respect American rights during the Napoleonic Wars. -
illegal slave trade
In the early 1800s, slavery was at its peak, the number of slaves in the united states had quadrupled. The last known illegal slave trade happened in 1876 but was more common in the 30's. Much like the Embargo act, people were doing whatever they could to get resources or slaves transported to other places. -
Emancipation Proclamation
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The proclamation said "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." -
jim crow
The Jim Crow laws were racial segregation state and local laws enacted after the Reconstruction period in Southern United States. That continued in force until 1965. This shows tht even after the Emancipation Proclamation, that whites and blacks were still not equal like Lincoln had writtern about and hoped for. -
racial inequality during the depression
Mny blacks were fired or kicked out of their jobs in order to accomadate the white citizens during the great depression. Blacks were always seconded to white citizens much like they were when the jim crow laws were put into place -
Rosa parks arrested and start of boycott
Rosa parks had denied a white woman of a seat on the bus because she was tired and her feet hurt so she didnt want to stand. This started something huge and the montgomery boycott was created. This connects to inequality because the had to give up her "posession" to accomodate a white person.
