She was born in Metairie, LA and is 59 years of age("Ellen Degeneres"). She is an American comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer. DeGeneres starred in the popular sitcom Ellen from 1994 to 1998 and has hosted her syndicated TV talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, since 2003. -
Coming out on television
Ellen shocked the world when she came out as gay on television, where her alter ego, Ellen Morgan, came out of the "closet". She was on the front cover of Time Magazine in April of 1997, with a three page spread explaining why she was coming out. In fact, the article about her was the first written source where any actor talked openly about their sexuality. -
Coming out on television continued
In a CNN article talking about the outcome of her announcement, Ellen was quoted, saying " I did date men into my early twenties, but stopped shortly after she figured out she liked women"(CNN). Not only was Ellen extremely brave to come out to the public, she also started a trend of having actors be openly gay, lesbian on T.V. She came out even though not everyone supported who she loves. She has proved day in and day out that loving yourself is one of the most important things in life. -
Ellen's Breakup with Anne Heche
Ellen's breakup with Anne Heche ended horribly, and was spread all throughout magazines and picture of the two of them with rips down the middle. The photograph shows Ellen and Anne walking away from each other upset about what has happened(Smolowe). This was her first heart break, which resulted in the two women bitter with each other. Ellen had had her first rough patch( in the very large rough patch of being accepted) with love, and it was sad to see her relationship not work out. -
Ellen gives away ten beds,a car and $20,000 to a family in need
Ellen features the Linnette family, with ten members of their family in a cramped house, no car and a dying grandmother as well as father with three jobs on her show. Not only does Ellen give them a car, she aids them with ten new beds and $20,000 hidden in one of the beds(TheEllenShow). This demonstrates how important giving is to her, because she has directly impacted thousands of people, by donating to charities or giving something directly to them. She is so kind and understanding of people! -

Ellen and Portia are getting divorced, after seven years of marriage. Both women are on the cover of Star Magazine,without rings on their hands. They have stern, upset looks on their faces, and are dressed very professionally(Weiss).This picture shows that Ellen is like many other people, going through such a rough breakup. She is always portrayed so positively through the Ellen show as well as the media, so it's surprising to see such a negative side to her. Hopefully it is for the best. -

President Barack Obama presents Ellen with the Medal of Freedom, and thanks her for her bravery and courage. There is a recording as well before he presents the medal to her, saying" In every role she reminds us to be kind to on another, and to treat people they way you want to be treated"(ABCNews). The medal represents how much Ellen has endured based on who she chooses to love. She is an amazing inspiration to the LGBTQ community as well as to many people all over the country, and world!
