Age of Speech
All throughout human history, oral communication has been the staple of education. Dating back thousands of years, speech has been used to transfer knowledge for generations in the form of teachings, stories, legends and the like. While other forms of education have come forth, oral education stands as a back-up to all of these and, in a sense, forms their very basis. Oral education will likely remain until the end of humanity itself. -

Age of Writing
Writing is second only to oral communication in age. It has a history too long to pinpoint an exact starting date. According to the bible, Moses carved the ten commandments on a stone tablet around 700BC. The earliest confirmed written source is a limestone tablet known as the Kish tablet, found in the city of Kish in Sumer (7500BC). Writing was considered a hinderance by some Greek philosophers, but its value as an objective, long-lasting source of information can not be denied. -
Broadcasting and Video
Broadcasting has been a big step for humanity in every way possible. Of course, education is no exception. In 1920, BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) started broadcasting educational radio programs for schools and the television was first utilized for education in the 1960's. In 1969, the British Government established the Open University (OU) in partnership with BBC by integrating already existing courses into audio and video formats. -
Computerized Education.
While more significantly developed towards the 21st century, the first attempt at computerized education was B.F. Skinner's experimental teaching machines in 1954. As humanity evolved, so did our technology. The digitalization of information made transmission and storage cheaper and more available. With the launch of YouTube in 2005, the future of education was sealed. With time, digital environments took over. Today, LMSs are widely used to facilitate teaching and computers are on top. -
