J. Wesley Baker published a paper talking about a flipped classroom. Possibly the first time the term was used publicly. Learning happens outside of a classroom, often times online. -

Part of No Child Left Behind Act, Supplemental Educational Services required that low academic students were provided with tutoring. However, there were many problems with this and eventually it was tossed out.

Higher Education Act Amended
Amended to expand access to higher education for low and middle income students. Provides additional funds for graduate students and increase in accountability. -
IDEA
The Individuals with Disability Improvement Act of 2004. Further support for students with disabilities to make sure that they are receiving appropriate education that is tailored to their needs.

Khan Academy
Related to a flipped classroom. Salman Khan made videos on subjects he was tutoring on so they could be played when needed or at parts that were needed. This eventually formed Khan Academy. -
CTE
Career technical education standards adopted by Board of Education in 2005. They help by incorporating cutting-edge knowledge about career options, technology, and skills required for success in adult life.

States are provided with funding to develop technical skills of students who enroll in CTE programs.

Distance Learning
By 2008, online schooling was available in 44 states for grades k-12. Distance learning has been found as early as 1728 when someone tried to teach through mail correspondence. However, skip to present and it is now easier than ever because of technology. -
Race to the Top
"Race to the Top" and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) 2009. This was a competitive grant that district tried to win by fulfilling certain requirements such as adopting CCSS or raising test scores at their lowest schools. Aimed at raising teaching and learning standards.

American Reinvestment and Recovery Act
Provides 90 billion dollars for education for things such as preventing layoffs and for school modernization and repairs. -

Quest to Learn, first class to open in New York to teach primarily through game-based learning. -
CCSS
A set of common core state standards for grades K-12. They were created so that there was a clear set of guidelines/standards that all students had to know so that all states (all students) are learning the same thing no matter what school or state.

Kindergarten Readiness Act
The 2010 Kindergarten Readiness Act, signed into law by Gov. Schwarzenegger, changed the kindergarten entry date from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1 so that children enter kindergarten at age 5. TK made sure that students were ready for kindergarten with proper curriculum and certified teachers.

Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve.
Deals with using all levels of DOK questions and urging students to become critical thinkers.

Governor Jerry Brown signed a new school funding model called Local Control Funding Formula. It makes sure that schools plan out their budgeting, makes sure to involve parents.

Every Student Succeeds Act
Focus on early education. Somethings it is aimed at is that all students will be taught based on high standards so that they will be college ready and assessments will be provided to see if they are meeting the high standards.

Attendance
The most current attendance policy states that "A child who turns six years on or before the 30 June of the school year is of compulsory school age and must attend school or an approved alternative education program on a full time basis from the beginning of that school year". -
Child Nutrition Guidelines
Schools are starting to offer free lunch and breakfast to ALL students. They no longer take income into account. My district started this this school year. -
Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century
Trump signed in July 2018, it reauthorized the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. -
Conclusion
Doing the research for this project has showed me that education is taking a new direction based on the needs of our students and the changes in technology. It is also apparent that money has been and always will be an issue in education. -
Conclusion 2
I enjoyed reading the positive new changes in our education system such as providing classes that will get our students ready for the future, investing more in a higher education, and taking advantage of our changing technology and incorporating it into our classroom as we see with flipped classrooms and STEM courses.
