Education Path

  • I take my first honors class sophomore year in high school

It was the first time I heard about college and began to consider it.
  • I take my first AP courses junior year in high school

I began to take AP English and AP History and noticed how much more personable and accessible teachers were. They really challenged us and respected us as students. I wondered why the teachers in foundation and extension classes were not the same.
  • Applying to colleges

When I realized I had only been accepted to 2 out of 9 colleges I applied to I felt bad about not taking my education seriously. I wished I would have learned about some beneficial resources early on. I wished I had a mentor.
  • $40K/year for what??

As I attend St. John's I began to see the politics that ran the school. As a Spanish and Italian major I was not challenged, the professors and World Language department were more concerned about having a full classroom, than a quality world languages program. I wish I would've known sooner. They were experts at glamorizing the school during prospective student visits. This made me mad, students should not be deceived like this.
  • I graduated college, now what?

With no guidance and direction I chose my fleeting "passion" of pursuing a career in Manhattan real estate just as I had received an interview for Teach for America. I chose money over what I knew was in my heart, but was scared to commit myself to becoming a teacher. Real estate proved to be a bad experience; sales was simply not for me. I could not lie to people and require them to pay a large fee for an apartment rental. I knew it was ridiculous to ask and the customers themselves knew it.
