  • American Indian boarding schools

    American Indian boarding schools
    American Indian boarding schools created a learning environment in which students were not gaining general education, such as math or reading, but were rather gaining a knowledge of the way of the white man. These schools changed the way Native Americans would view education hereafter. Their view of schools became one of fear, rather than an inviting place to learn and created a stigma of the schools for generations after.
  • The Cardinal Principles Report of 1918

    The Cardinal Principles Report of 1918
    The Cardinal Principles Report of 1918 expanded the programs and curriculum that was to be taught in high schools. This changed what was to be taught in high schools by adding more classes, which gave students more options to choose from. This effectively changed the high school system and what students could learn in high school.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    Brown v Board of Education
    This court case legally desegregated schools and allowed African American students to attend schools with white children. Although this did not completely intergrate the schools, this court case was one of the first steps in bringing children of all races together.
  • Lau v Nichols

    Lau v Nichols
    This court case expanded the rights of students whose first language was not English. It gave these students an equal opportunity in school and a better chance to succeed outside of school by assisting them in their studies and in their knowledge of the English language.
  • Columbine School Shooting

    Columbine School Shooting
    This tragic event helped to create an awareness in schools about issues in safety and bullying. However, it also started a trend and created a fear among students in schools. Due to this event, schools have set up better safety drills and protocals and tried to create a more welcoming and safe evniornment for all students.
