Education Historical Timeline

By Gclift
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

This event ended segregation in public schools. It allowed black and white students to receive the same education and that’s when America started to become a better nation.
  • The Refugee Act of 1980

Allows immigrants to come to American schools, including special needs, to get a proper education. This act is so important because it not only opened our schools up to foreigners but foreigners with special needs which is a really big step for America to do such a kind act.
  • The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990

Added diversity to our nation and schools. America needed diversity in order to see that whites are not the only people on this earth, and end our racism.
  • Improving America’s Schools Education Act

Reforms Title 1, funds bilingual and immigrant students, drop-out prevention, and educational technology. This act is important because it deals with multiple issue happening in a school. It gives money and attention to students in need, helps students graduate, and allows them to explore technology educationally.
  • Multicultural Education: Transformative Knowledge and Action

Expands scholarships to multiculturalism in education. This allowed different people from different cultures to be able to get scholarships to help pay for their education which everyone needs help with nowadays.
  • The Higher Education Act

Expands education for lower income students, and provides additional funds for college. This is important because even lower income students need to have the same opportunities that middle and first class students have to be able to expand their education in order to get a good paying job.
  • The Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act

Another form of the No Child Left Behind Act, which gave students with special needs what they needed in order to have a safe, educational learning environment. This act is important because all students need to be equipped properly for school and have whatever they need in order to be able to learn.
  • President Obama joins the “too much testing” Movement

Movement was intended to limit standardized testing to 2% of class time. I know how awful standardized tests are because I was forced to take them my whole life. I honestly hope that it will be gone by the time my kids go to school so they won’t have to suffer through them like I had to.
  • Transgender Students Access to Bathrooms that Match their Gender

This movement made school districts allow transgender students to be able to use the restroom of their gender. If the district did not comply then they would be sued or lose their federal aid. I think it’s great that America is progressively making itself a better place for everyone, and finally allowing students to be themselves.
  • Gun Laws

Thousands of students across America hold a walk out demanding changes in gun laws. With all the school shootings that have been happening, it’s scary to go to school and think that it would be my last day and I won’t see my parents again. No child should have to think that and no parents should have to think they’re not going to see their child again. It’s outrageous how many that have happened and will continue to happen until something changes.
