Education in the Early 1600's were left up to clergy men to teach colonies basic reading of the bible and basic town laws. Lessons were mainly giving to young boys who would have half day lessons so they can leave and help on the farms. -

Massachusetts Bay School Law
The Massachusetts Bay School Law Mandated that parents and masters teach their children the principles of religion and the capital laws of common wealth. -
Old Deluder Act of 1647
The Deluder Act of 1674 dictated that towns of 50 families higher a school master to teach children (mostly boys) basic skills and towns of 100 families or more have a grammar school master. Mainly wealthy families who could afford the school master the children (boys) went to the school and the daughters were taugh elementary skills at home. -
1700's School Houses
Still few school houses existed, many education still taught in homes. -
Literacy Rates Rise
At this time literacy rates for white families were on the rise. With states of 75% Males and 65% female*.
* Females still taught at elementary levels of reading and basic math for home management. -

1852 Massachusetts Requires Attendances to a School House
Massachusetts requires by law that children attend some form of Education -
Jim Crow Laws
Jim Crowe laws depict that the educations system become legally racially segregated. -
First Colored School Opened
The first school house for African American children opens up legally. -
Supreme Courts Ruled Separate and Equal
In 1896 the Supreme Court in Plessy vs Ferguson to establish separate School Systems for Blacks and Whites. Although financing for African Americans were next to none, how could they be equal when obtaining quality supplies was not an option. -
Supreme Courts Ruled Seprate and Unequal
Schools were legally desegregated in1954 the Supreme Courts decision of Brown vs Board of Education, which overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson and stated that "separted educational facilities are inherently unequal." -
1960- Present Day American Public School System Open to All
There are three types of Education available to most Americans.
