The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Britain. It broke out for a variety of reasons, including Britain’s seizure of American ships, impressment of American sailors into the British navy and restriction of trade between the United States and France. In June, 1812, James Madison became the first U.S. president to ask Congress to declare war. The conflict finally ended with the Treaty of Ghent in 1815. -

John Quincey Adams won the electon and became president in the year of 1825. He remained President from 1825 until 1829. -

Poe's first love was Sarah Elmira Royster and they were secretly engaged years before he married Virginia Clemm. Sarah's father would not approve of the marriage and began to intercept letters from Poe to her, making her think Poe had forgotten her. She then married someone else. -
POE'S LIFE: Poe's Foster Mother Dies
On February 28, 1829, Francis Allan, Poe's foster mother, died from tuberculosis, which was the same disease that Poe's biological mother died from. -
POE'S LIFE: Poe marries Virgina Clemm
In 1836, Poe married his first cousin, Virginia Clemm, who was thirteen years old at the time. They married in Richmond. -
POE'S LIFE: Poe publishes his first classics
In the year of 1842, Poe published mutliple books that would later become classics. The Pit and the Pendulum”, “The Masque of the Red Death", and “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt” were the three stories that he published during that time period. A year later, he published “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Gold Bug” and “The Black Cat”. -

On October 7, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe died. His death is still a mystery today but there are a couple different theories. Some say he died from alcoholism, others say he had brain fever, rabies, and some say he may have been abused and then had a heart failure. -

In the year of 1849, the California Gold Rush started when gold was found at Sutter's Mill. It attracted more and more people to the United States and during that time, California became a state. The goldrush ended when silver was found in Nevada in 1859.
