    Edgar Allan Poe was born to biological mother and father Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr.

  • Edgar's sister was born

    Edgar's sister Rosalie is born and shortly after her birth David Poe leaves the family with two sons Henry and Egdar, and new baby Rosalie. Also while all of this was happening Elizabeth is diagnosed with Tuberculosis

  • Parents Death

    In Richmond, Virginia Edgar's mother Elizabeth dies of Tuberculosis.Within days,David dies of the same disease.With no parents to take care of him and his siblings,the children get split up and live seperately, both with wealthy Richmond families.

  • They go to England

    In 1811, when edgar allan poe is adopted by a Richmond couple John and Frances Allan, take Edgar as a foster child.The Allan family sails to London, where Edgar enrolls in school.

  • Returning to the USA

    5 years after leaving America to go to England, the Allan family returns to Richmond,Virginia.

  • First Poem

    15 year old Edgar Allan Poe writes his first poem"Last Night'.

  • Going to College

    Poe enrolls midway through the academic year at the University of Virginia, which had opened less than a year before.

  • Problems with Poe

    After being involved in a $2,000 gambling debt while at college, Poe gets in an argument with his foster father when he refuses to give him money to settle the debt. Poe leaves college and the Allan family,moving to Baltimore to join relatives there.

  • The new Edgar

    Poe enrolls in the U.S. Army under the name "Edgar A. Perry." Shortly after his first book a poetry collection entitled 'Tamerlane and Other Poems" is published. The author is listed only as "A Bostonia'.

  • Death of Foster Mother

    Poe's foster mother, Frances Allan, with who he was still close, dies in Richmond. Poe was by then a sergeant major in the Army ,obtains leave to travel to her funeral.

  • West Point

    Poe is appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. A few months later he publishes his second book of poetry "Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems'.

  • Leving West Point

    Tired of the military, Poe successfully attempts to get himself kicked out of West Point. When he stops going to classes and chapel, Poe is dismissed. He publishes several anonymous short stories plus another book of poems.
