Edgar Allan Poe joines the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Poe later realized that he didnt want to stay at West Point. He then refused to go to chapel or attend classes, and later got kicked out.

Brother dies
His older brother died of tuberculosis at the age of 24. It is said that edgar and Henry were very similar personality wise. After Henrys death Edgar developed a drinking problem.

Marriage
Edgar Allan Poe and Virginia Clemm met when he was twenty and she was seven. Neilson Poe offered to marry Virginia Clemm so that she could have an education. Edgar wanted to marry her so he offered to take in and provide for Virginias whole family. At the age of twenty-seven he married his thirteen year old cousin.
