Fur Trade
When the French arrived in New France, the began a new trade: the fur trade. They also introduced a new trading system to the natives. Now, the economy revolved around fur. They set up several trading posts to help this trade grow bigger. -
Effects of the fur trade based economy
-New trading posts were built: Trois-Rivieres and Quebec
-The demand for fur increased significantly, therefor they had to expand the territory in order to have enough animals to hunt
-The french population wasn't large enough, therefor they had to become allies with the Natives so that they would work together -
Attempt to diversify the economy
Jean Talon was given the task to diversify the economy and populate the colony, however he did not succeedin the diversification part because 1) the mercantilism system prevented this and 2) The colony did not have enough people to keep up the fur trade as well as have different jobs too, therefor the economy stayed based on mainly fur. -
Beaver Crisis
Fur was no longer considered fashionable, therefor pelts started to build up in warehouses. As a result, the King ordered a slow down of the trade, which had a negative impact on the economy because that was their main activity. However in 1715 the trade regained strength due to the ruining of the old furs by rodents and insects. -
New Regions
The seigneuries became over populated, therefor the colonization of new regions occured. This was due to the timber industry; they colonized what is now known as Mauricie, the Laurentides, Lac St-Jean and Outaouais. -

The fir trade was now in the hands of the British, therefore many french buisness men returned to France. -
Timber Industry
Due to the blockade of Napoleon, the demand for timber increased immensely. This led to the creation of new jobs such as sawmill and logger. -
Napoleons Blockade
Napoleon created a blockade that would make it harder for Britain to get timber, therefor they looked to Canada for timber. This started the timber industry. -

Merge of fur companies
The North-West Company merged with the Hudson's bay company due to the decline of the fur trade. Before, they competed against each other but after the merge, they were successful. -
Reciprocity Treaty
Canada signs the reciprocity treaty with the United States. This meant that the customs between the two countries would be ceased for the upcoming ten years, and this was an advantage for Canada because the USA had a large market. -

World War I
1914-1918: Canada was forced to fight in the war, because Britain was fighting in it, and they were their mother country. Women's rights improved, since their husbands were at war therefor they took their place in society; their jobs&vote. There was also a rise in economy because they needed to provide for the fighting countries. -
The Roaring Twenties
This was a time of great economy in Quebec, people had extra money to spend. Many factories and railroads were built, although there was a greater divide between the rich and the poor. -
The Great Depression
The was because of the crash of the stock market. Massive layoffs, families bought very little, the economy was bascically broken. The governments solutions were work camps, direct aid, and public work projects. World War II ended he Great depression. -
Post World War II Period
In the late 1940's, after the second world war. The population rose due to the baby-boom, there was also a natural increase in population, as well as immigration. -
The Quiet Revolution
A fast and far reaching process in which the political, social, and economic reform in Quebec in the 1960's. There was intervention in the society by the government, as well as the loss of the power of the church in several sectors. They modernized the education system, as well as making the hydroelectric sector government owned.
