  • John Locke

    John Locke is an English philosopher considered the founder of modern education philosophy. His ideas didn’t greatly impact ECE when he first shared them but later his best ideas were popularized. Today his contributions point to the effect of the environment on learning.

    He is considered the father of modern education and advocated for education reforms that focused on practical learning and the development of critical thinking skills. He also emphasized the importance of education for all children.

    He was another philosopher who believed in the natural goodness of children and advocated for an education system that nurtured their qualities. He made a significant contribution to ECE by writing his book that promoted a child-centered approach that focused on individual development.
  • Friedrich Wilhelm Froebel

    Friedrich is one of the major contributors to ECE he is known as the father of kindergarten. He had a rough childhood so he wanted to change that for future generations and that he why he focused on promoting children's right to play and have fun while learning.
  • Kindergarten

    Kindergarten was established in Germany and spread to the United States about 20 years later. By the 1970s there was an emphasis on academic goals for the 5-year-old kindergarteners. Kindergarten impacted ECE by introducing a structured and formal approach to young children.
  • Nursery Schools

    Nursery Schools emerged as a response to the changing social and economic conditions during the Industrial Revolution. More parents started working out of the house so the nursery schools gave parents a place to send their children that is safe and educational.
  • Media and Technology

    Media has affected the ECE world a lot because people share stories online and put their opinions out there so others will think differently and build different opinions. Media can be good or bad but technology helps students expand their knowledge because they can learn things that their teacher hasn’t taught them.
  • A. S. Neill

    He founded the Summerhill School in England, which became a symbol of his progressive educational philosophy. He gave students the freedom to learn in their own way and influenced how we think about education today. His work influences ECE by promoting a child-centered approach to learning.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik was the first satellite launched into space. It impacted ECE in the U.S. because it motivated a focus on science and math education. This leads to increased funding for children to learn more about science and enhance scientific literacy.
  • Social Reform

    The social reforms advocated for equal access to education for all children. The desire for social reform led to the creation of Head Start. These reforms have helped shape policies and practices that prioritize the well-being and educational needs of young children.
  • Robert Owen

    Robert was a social reformer and entrepreneur be believed in providing a nurturing and stimulating environment for children. He established the New Lanarl Mills in Scottland. His work helped pave the way for modern ECE.
  • High Scope

    A high scope was created to address the effects of poverty on children’s developmental attention on aspects of learning. There were two studies funded by the federal government and High Scope was one of them. This study had recommendations for the physical environment and daily schedule.
  • Head Start

    Head Start began as an act on the social action on the “war on poverty” but is now so much more than a way for kids in poverty to get started with an education. Head Start has pioneered the inclusion of children with disabilities in classrooms. Head Start programs showed children that anyone can be successful in the classroom.
  • DAP

    DAP stands for developmentally appropriate practice. It's an approach to teaching and learning that takes into account the unique needs and abilities of each child. It focuses on creating a supportive and engaging environment where children can learn and grow at their own pace. It has helped to create more inclusive and effective early childhood education practices.
  • Standards

    By having standards for people who are working with children, children get a better education and are cared for. If there weren’t standards and regulations for teachers then students wouldn’t get a good education because you have to have the drive to be able to teach children and be willing to go out of your way to help them.
  • Maria Montessori

    Maria is an Italian physician and educator who made significant contributions to ECE. She developed the Montessori method, which is an educational approach that focuses on the natural development of children, she believed in creating prepared environments where children could engage in self-directed learning and exploration.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind is a U.S. federal law that is aimed to improve education standards. The goal was to ensure that every student, no matter their background, is receiving a quality education. It didn’t directly impact ECE but it helped children get a good education and it emphasized the importance of early education and prepared students for success.
