Luis Vaez de Torres
Luis Vaez de Torres arrived in Australia in 1606, his ship was called 'San Predrico'.Torres was searching for the Great South Land.150 years later the british found luis's maps,he spent two months mapping the Torris Strait.Nothing is known about Torres early life. -
Willien Janszoon
Williem Janszoon sailed to Australia from Bantam in 1606 in a ship called the 'Duyfken'.Jaszoon came to Australia in search for gold.There was conflict and fighting between the natives and Williem Janzoon. -
Dirk Hartog
Dirk Hartog was a Dutch explorer that came to Australia in 1616 on a ship called the 'Eendrcht'.Dirk was sailing to the Spice Islands but his ship was blown off course due to his bad navagation.Hartog left behind a pewer plate.Dirk Hartog was born in 1580 and died in 1621 aged 41 years.Dirk didn't spend much time on land considering it was not valuable. -
Makassans
The Makassan Trepangers started comeing to Australia in the 1640's in boats called Praus, that carried 30 crew members.They came to fish for Trepang (sea cucumber) to sell at the Chinesse Markets.The Makassans and Aborignies traded,maniely peaceful contact but some hostile contact.The Makassans interduced small pox. -
Abel Tasman
Abel Tasman owned two ships called the Heemshelk {holded 60 crew members} and the Zeehean{holded 50 crew members}. Tasman was sailing to find if there was a Great South Land and to find out more about it.There was no conflict with the native Australians but he heard music and saw fire. -

When Abel Tasman returned from New Holand the governor-general was not pleased with him,he had not mapped all of New Holland,not made contact with any contact with the natives and had some men killied by the Maori in New Zealand.In 1644 he was sent back to start at the north of New Holland and make his way to the east,Tasman could not find a way through the reefs and islands of the Torres Straight. -
Wiliam Dampier
William Dampier came to Australia in 1688 in a ship called 'Cygnet',he was a british navigator,geographer,naturaist and a mapmaker.Dampier was a pirate that attacked spanish ships. When William Dampier was explorering the west coast of Australia he quickly went off shore to observe the plants and people,but was chased away by some war like Aborigines.William named Cygnet Bay after his ship. -

James Cooks first expedition to Australia
James Cook was a british explorer,his voyage started at England in 1768.James was hired to observe the path of Venus in Tahiti,the voyage to around 4 years.Cooks first ship was called the 'Endeavour'.James second part of his voyage was to search the South Pacific for Terra Australis,Cook descovered that Van Demonds Land was not concected to the Great South Land.
