    Mayflower Compact is signed
    The Mayflower’s passengers knew that the New World’s earlier settlers failed because of lack of government, so they decided to make their own set of laws called the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact was a written agreement made by settlers in 1620 who came to America.The Mayflower Compact said that pilgrims would have to obey all of the laws made for the good of the colony. These laws gave a fair way to govern themselves. (KH)

    Maryland first Catholic Settlement
    In 1624, Lord Baltimore broke off from England to become a Roman Catholic, and asked the King if he could have a small piece of land in America. He wanted to give Roman Catholics a safe place to live, where they didn't have to worry about being discriminated against. King James agreed and gave him land next to the Potomac River. In 1633, more than 200 people came over to Maryland to start their new life. On March 24, 1634, they had a Catholic Mass to celebrate the start of their new colony. (ER)

In the act of witchcraft you had to come in contact with the devil, this was considered a sin because if denied God's supperioty.     First black slaves sent to Louisianna
    The first African slaves in Louisiana were captured by the French army in the Spanish War of Succession. Eight boatloads brought 2,000 Africans to the colony. The death rate was nearly as high as it had been for Indians facing European diseases. Scurvy, dysentery, respiratory and intestinal flues killed about half of them within a few years of their abduction. (KH)
