The Soviet Union sucessfully launched Sputnik 1. Sputnik was the worlds first artificial satellite and it was about the size of a beach ball, and took around 98 minutes to orbit the earth on its elliptical path. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
It was a thirteen day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over Soviet ballistic missiles deployed in Cuba. It was the closest the Cold War came to becoming a full-scale nuclear war.
