The first kindergarden was located in Watertown, Wisconsin. It was founded by Margaretha Schurz for children of German immigrants. -
Start of the Labrotory School at Univerisity of Chicago
The Laboratory school was started by John Dewey. It took place at University of Chicago. The curriculum was based on child-centered learning because Dewey believed that education is a "process of living not a preparation for future living". -
Childhood Education Was Published
Published by the IKU, this was the first professinal journal in early childhood education. Childhood Education is published 6 times a year. -
The Economic Opportunity Act
When this was passed, it marked the beggining of the War on Poverty and the foundation for Head Start. Its purpose was to Eliminate poverty, expand educational opportunities, increase the safety net for the poor and unemployed, and tend to health and financial needs of the elderly. -
Headstart Began
This program was started with federal money by director Jule Sugarman. The early programs were known as child development centers. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
The Act was passed giving all children with disabilities a free and appropriate education. It gave many rights to the parents of the students as well. -
Rights of the Child
The United Nations Convention for Rights of a Child went into effect. The signing by twenty nations was followed . It is a treaty that sets out the rights of a child. -
The No Child Left Behind Act
The Act requires states to develop assessments in basic skills. It provided funding for early literacy and learning to read.
