    Martin Luther (1483-1546)

    "Father" of reformation who wanted everyone to learn to read so they could read the bible. Believed literacy is very important.
  • John Amos Comenius (1592-1670)

    An advocate of universal education with a belief that learning should be meaningful. Educatuion begins with nurture and from birth to age six is critical for development. He was charged with the reform of the system of public education.
  • John Locke (1632-1704)

    Knowledge is received through the senses. Tabula Rosa- the idea of the child as a "blank slate."
  • Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827)

    Children deserve education so they can reach their potential. Instruction should focus on the idividual childs interest, abilities, and stages of development.
  • Fredrich Wilhelm Froebel (1782-1852)

    Devoted his life to developing a system to teach young children. He was know as 'the fatehr of kindergarten'. First philosopher to talk about the value of play for children.
  • Robert Owen (1771-1858)

    Disallowed child labor in his factories and he established the first infant schools.
  • Maria Montessori (1870-1952)

    Developed an entire system of education that emphasized sensory input, practical application, and hand on learning.
  • JOhn Dewey (1859-1952)

    Emphasixed the children's interests not based on age but on the basis of curriculum. This is known as child centered cirriculum.
  • Bloom and Hunt Research

    The period of most rapid intellectual occurs before the age of eight. Children are not born with a fixed intelligence.

    Served to lead the way on economic poverty and provide early childhood education for low income families.
